- Investigators started to look into her disappearance and confirmed she had faked the abduction. and had been living with her ex-boyfriend; she was arrested in march 2022.
- Papini confessed to the crime and prosecutors approached her with a plea bargain. The judge ordered her to repay almost $310,000 she collected from the state and serve 18 months in prison for the hoax.
